Myofascial Dry Needling
What is Myofascial Dry Needling?
Myofascial Dry Needling is a safe and effective treatment for muscular pain, sports injuries and restricted mobility. Small needles (the same as those used in acupuncture) are inserted into trigger points on the body as a way of releasing tight muscles and to facilitate the healing process. The term "trigger point" was coined by Dr Janet Travell in 1942; she and her colleagues went on to discover 255 of these points around the body. Interestingly many of these active trigger points can be the genesis of referred pain in other parts of the body. For example referred pain down the arm, wrist and hand may be caused by active trigger points in the muscles around the shoulder blade (infraspinatis). So in this case the pain in the arm will not be corrected by just treating the arm, one must look for patterns of referral. Needling into these trigger points stimulates the bodies own healing process leading to a quicker recovery time, improved mobility and reduced pain.
